Wow, I just realized that I haven’t asked 5 questions for the Free Box Break like I said I would in my initial post. We need to rectify that in the next 8 minutes! Let’s make this a really easy one.
Free Box Break Question #5: What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a card, and what was it? If you have a post on your blog about it, please feel free to link to it.
I’ll show my answer sometime within the week.
And that’s all five questions. If you haven’t answered everything, you better do so quick. We’re opening the box on April 5, so to keep your claim on your free team, you need to go back and find all the other questions that you may have missed.
Thanks everyone!
At the moment, $58.50 on a Getzlaf 1/1. I’d reveal more, but I’ve yet to post on it. Gotta keep some amount of mystery! It’s actually sitting, still bubble mailered up, on my desk. A rainy day treat, I guess.
I haven’t spent more than a few dollars on any one card in over a decade. I can’t afford to buy that way and prefer to buy in lots. It either gets me a load of cards I want, or something I want and some tradebait I can turn into something I want. I just worked out a deal for a big lot of vintage catcher cards on blowout. It cost me $40. I’ll be showing them once they arrive.
the most i spent was about 5 bucks on a johnny bench card. its still one of my favorites.
its ironic i wont spend a lot on a known, like individual cards, but i’ll spend $20 on an unknown, like a discount box.
The most, around $15 bucks. Blogged about here:

Recently: $11.50

Thanks for the free break, I’m glad I voted for it!!
I spent around $35 for a pretty mangled 1952 Red Man Ted Williams, without the tab. I wanted an older Ted Williams in my collection.
I do believe it’s $40 for a Nolan Ryan jersey card from his Mets days… if I remember correctly.. it’s very early in the AM and my brain isn’t functioning too well…
I sent little over $100 for 2001 Sweet Spot #62 Ichiro Suzuki SB RC. Other than that I don’t spend much on singles but really wanted this card.
I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $10.00 on any single card. I’ve bought a few Barry Larkin cards for a bit under $10…most of my purchases are boxes as well.
Same here as most guys, I don’t think I’ve ever bought a single card for more than $10. I just bought an Evgeni Malkin jersey relic on ebay for $5 I’m pretty pumped about. I try to search out good deals instead of spending a lot of money.
I am (very slowly) collecting the Upper Deck piece of history inserts from the early 00’s. There is a 500 HR set and a 3,000 hit set. I don’t cover it in my posts because it isn’t relevant to the main topic of my blog.
I’ve tracked what I’ve spent on cards the last 3 years, but I don’t know some of the earlier ones. I know I spent $300 to get a lot that had both Foxx and Ott 500HR, which in hindsight is a little more than I should have for those 2 guys. So that’s 150 per card. Before I started “writing down” what I paid, I had also bought a Griffey 500HR, a Williams 500HR, and Aaron 500HR and a Ty Cobb 3,000H. I know all of those were over 100 bucks. I think I spent $125 or so for the Griffey and Cobb, and the Aaron and Williams were probably just under 200 bucks, so those are probably the two most expensive.
About $40 for 1974 Topps Dave Winfield, his rookie card. I wanted one in very nice shape.
In 1990 at the height of Rickey’s popularity I spent $35 on a seriously beat-up Rickey Henderson RC. It was at the local flea market and I was 8 years old at the time. I figured someday it would be worth a fortune. Those rounded corners and crease marks were gold in my eyes.
$22 for a 64 Topps Pete Rose. Love that card!
I’ve really never spent a whole lot on one card, so I’d have to say about $23 on an Ezequiel Carrera printing plate from 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft. I’m trying to get every parallel of that card (although I might have to spend more on the red refractor…)
$100 for a T206 Cy Young. You have to read my post about it to see how I got it at that price.

$38.77 for a retro black bordered mirrored parallel of PK Subban #/100

$12 on my Emilio Bonifacio bowman platinum card
60 bucks for a Ryan Zimmerman 05 Bowman Chrome Draft rookie auto.
It killed me to do it, but I spent about $40 last Septemnber on a Nolan Ryan triple relic from his Mets (with pinstripe), Angels, and Rangers days. I needed it for a set I’m working on. Before that, the most I ever spent was $10.
I didn’t spill the beans in my post of what I paid for my 2012 Topps Marquee Tim Hudson auto ($85), but by far it’s the most I’ve spent on a single card since I started collecting in 1990.

I bought the 1/1 2011 Topps Tribute Ubaldo Jimenez for $75. Three days later, he was traded. Four days after that, I lost my job. Maybe it was karma trying to tell me I overpaid.
About $18 on ebay for a Topps Rookie Cup Joe Charboneau #’d 1 of 2 !
Maybe $5, I don’t generally buy expensive singles because of budget issues.
Probably about $5, not sure really. Like a couple others, I don’t buy many singles, and when I do they don’t cost much.
$35 for a Halladay 1/1!
I spent a little over $80 on a Willie McCovey patch auto card.
I am more of a pack buster than a card buyer…I like the risk of it all. I prolly have not spent more than $10 on a single card ever!
I spent $12 on a 1965 Al Kaline, very nice condition. I believe I spent the same for an Ernie Banks,, 1961 HOF.
I spent $60 on a Leaf Signature George Brett auto
I recently purchased a Kirby Puckett UD Sweet Spot autograph for around $115. He was one of my favorite players growing up and it was a shame he left us at such an early age.
