Recent Royals: 2008 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Montgomery

I have very few card collections given my limited resources and space, but I did decide some time ago to begin collecting on-card Royals autographs. It’s been a blast so far trying to track these things down and this is the latest addition to my collection. To view the cards currently in the collection, take a look at the Gallery. If you have any on-card Royals autos- especially one you don’t see in that gallery there- chances are I need them so don’t hesitate to drop me a line!

How do I know it's from the Draft set? I spent 30 minutes looking it up. Lame.

Let’s get a couple things straight: I’m not a prospector and I’ve gone on record numerous times as being somewhat anti-Bowman Chrome (and Draft, from which this card came thought you wouldn’t know it unless you spent a perfectly good evening trying to figure it out). In my opinion, a player shouldn’t get a card in a Major League Baseball set until he’s played in the Major Leagues. However, as a collector with a very specific collection, I can’t resist to call of the on-card Royals autograph, prospect (current or former) or not.

So here you have it. A legitimate Royals prospect who may be in the bigs by the end of the year. There were two big Royals prospects in the 2008 Bowman family, and Mike here is the 2nd banana to one Mr. Michael Moustakas whose cards remain out of my price range. I know there will come a time when I’ll have to buckle down and commit to this collection by dropping some fat cash on the stud prospect RC auto, but I’ll settle for a 2nd banana with a 1.0 WHIP and 11 SO in 5 innings thus far in spring training. Speaking of spring training, the Royals’ hitters are absolutely crushing it. I know it’s no indication of real season performance, but it’s pretty sweet to see Kila, Aviles and Maier with OPS above 1.200!

Even though this card only cost me about $18 shipped from eBay, it still stung a bit. I’ve felt the burn of the prospecting bubble before, but I think there’s a clear distinction between the Porspector and the Collector. Now that I’m firmly the latter, it just feels good to add another sweet card to my collection- especially one who’s still in baseball, as there’s been a dearth of that in my recent Royals lately!

Now who’s got some Moustakas autos to trade me?

That’s a nice card. I’ve been wanting to add that to my collection, too, but even at $18 for a guy that might not go pro is kind of a lot to me. Still, I’m sure I’ll add one eventually. Good luck on the Moustakas. I just torture myself watching his autos on ebay.
