Community Break Box #5: 2003 Fleer Splendid Splinters

I’m sure the masses are hungry for more box busting action.  I’m sorry about the delay.  I had a couple wedding and other personal things to tend to which kept me out of the apartment these past couple days.  When I last left you, we had just opened one of our 2003 boxes.  Now it’s time to see if the winning tradition will continue with our box of 2003 Fleer Splendid Splinters. I’m sorry about the blinding back light.  I probably should have shot the other direction after having to choose a new set-up.  Hopefully you guys can still see the cards well enough (even if the names are too tiny to read in person, let alone video)

How’d we do?
I’m sure a couple of you think we did pretty good here.  Personally, I wish it would have turned out better in terms of the wood cards.  And I wish we would have beat the odds again, but no such luck.  And I wish there weren’t so many doubles.  Again, I’ll be shipping them to you unless you specifically ask me not to.  Here’s a peak at the inserts, etc.

I'm not sure how I feel about an insert being called "Knothole Gang"

Oh yeah.  It’s amazing how short-term my memory is sometimes.  The family trees are not the first multi-team cards we’ve come across as I stated in the video.  I had already completely forgotten about the dual cards in Platinum that need to be randomed.  There were so many cards in that box, I lost track.  The Niekro is the only one that would have to be potentially randomed at this point.  The Giambi’s will go to the Red Sox since Yankees became mine at the last minute.

Printed on Ted Williams' bat. The announcer, not the Hall of Famer

Like I said, I wish things would have turned out differently for the wood cards.  It was really enough for me to see and touch them in person.  I would like to have placed them in claimed team stacks as well.  So, if anyone’s interested in either, let me know.

These would have been even better hits in 2003

Pretty nice player selection on our hits.  I know (Joe…) should be pretty happy about the Piazza (as would about 10 other bloggers that collect him).  Nomar still has a strong collecting contingent as well, I believe.  Congratulations, TJ.

I know I’m keeping this short again today.  I should be back tomorrow with our second to last box.  Worst case scenario, they should both be up by opening day!  Until next time.

  • Damn Mariners! I should have just saved the money, and not splurged for a second team. 29 base cards and ZERO inserts? Get with the program Fleer!

  • Oh, and another nice box. I like that Jeter. Did I really just say something nice about a Yankees card?

  • The base cards in this set look much nicer in the video than they did in scans, and those wood cards are awesome…was really hoping we would pull the Tejada wood. I’m not a huge fan of the design of that Piazza relic but the Garciapara is kindof cool.

Got the non SP portion of the team set, so I can’t complain 🙂 Thanks again for the video Jonny.

P.S. I don’t think the quality was as bad as you think it was, it seemed ok to me

  • Alec

I would totally be interested in that wood Jeter card if no one else is…

  • Beardy,

At least you have 29 cards without any inserts. I’m sitting at 16;) Not complaining, though. Having lots of fun and these are some holes I need in my Expos sets (come on no-name rookie and Vladdie short prints).

I’ll also call dibs on any leftover cards printed on faux wood if nobody else wants them.

This set has some pretty fun color schemes and design elements. I don’t know how long I’ll think that for. They do need a retro-cartoonish character to go with them, though.

  • Play at the Plate

I can’t complain about the Rangers after the last box, but only two cards out of this box. I don’t even know who else is in the set. Those wood cards are cool though. The video wasn’t as bad as you thought it was.

  • I too really wanted a wooden card, but perhaps that Niekro Family Tree card will fall into my pile after being randomed.
