I know a lot of people try to arrange group breaks, and it seems like quite a few are being organized around us, but I wanted to throw one more in the mix.
I’ve gone on something of a wax buying frenzy recently. Spurred by the response to my 2005 Leaf Review (many cards still not claimed, if you wanna trade), I snagged a few more older boxes that I planned to bust for review, Maddux and trade purposes.
This would be similar to the proposed group break over at A Pack To Be Named Later in that it should be pretty cheap for everyone involved as I’m not buying crazy expensive stuff and it would be wax that is generally older.
Here’s what I have either in hand or on the way so far:
1997 Fleer Series 2 Hobby (Ortiz RC for those that care)
1999 UD Ionix
2002 Topps Total (2 boxes of this, Wright and Mauer RCs for those that care)
2004 UD Vintage (most likely retail version, which seems to make little difference honestly)
I’m also looking at getting 04 Topps Total (only 1 box) and 08 UD Masterpieces if the price is right, and possibly a couple boxes of 09 O-Pee-Chee since the price is very right at one retailer.
I’m not 100% what the cost would be, but even though it’s a lot of wax, it shouldn’t be too terribly expensive.
Here’s the catch. I’m originally buying these for Maddux (and in the case of O-Pee-Chee, Dempster and Marmol in a cool set) and trades. I plan to take the Cubs in the break no matter what, but I also do not want to lose out on any Atlanta Maddux cards that come out of these. So, that means that whomever takes the Braves would have to be okay with losing out on a superstar. The good news is that I plan to discount that team for their courtesy. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, all breaks can and will be done on video so there are no shenanigans.
So…are people interested or would you rather I break them for fun and individual trades? If you want the group break, I have three follow-up questions:
1) Are you interested in the 08 Masterpieces and the 09 O-Pee-Chee or do you want it just pre-2005 stuff?
2) Do you feel team prices should be weighted to reflect big name RCs or prominence in the checklists?
3) Are there any boxes I have purchased already that you don’t want in the group break?
It’s tough sitting on unopened boxes…hopefully I’ll get enough feedback soon enough to know whether or not I can scratch my itchy trigger finger.
I’m sitting on a lot of Cubs cards here; I’d at least be interested in trading for the Twins cards from the break. Or any other Twins cards you might have, for that matter.
The card sets look interesting, but as with all group breaks, timing is the most important thing to me. If I sign up for one, I’m probably not going to do a second at the same time. It’s a money thing.
Yeah, moneys tight for me right now as well. I’d usually be all for a group break, but right now trades are about the best I can do which I’d definitely be interested in!
